CORRESPONDENCE OF ORION CLEMENS, SECRETARY AND SOMETIMES ACTING GOVERNOR OF NEVADA TERRITORY
AUGUST 16, 1861-NOVEMBER 10, 1864

This record (TERR-0131) consists of a letterpress copy book containing 497 pages.  The book contains copies of letters sent by Orion Clemens as Secretary of Nevada Territory or as Acting Governor and Ex Officio Superintendent of Indian Affairs of Nevada Territory.  The letters are in chronological order.

Subjects of the letters vary widely from routine office maintenance to declarations on specific topics.  Many of the letters were sent to Elisha Whittlesey, 1st Comptroller, U.S. Treasury, who oversaw the availability and dispersal of funds to operate the Territory, since those funds were supplied by the U.S. Treasury.

Some of the more predominant topics included printing of the journals and laws of the Legislature, election certifications, design and manufacture of the Nevada Territorial seal, the Nevada-California border dispute, and news of and orders to the militia in the Territory.

A guide to the letterpress copybook was created by Jeanine Whittenberg for the Nevada State Archives.  It includes the following data:  author, recipient, date, description (brief), subject (lengthier), box number, and page number.  From that guide two items were produced:  a chronological list of all letters and an alphabetical name index to letter recipients or subjects (when name not provided).
