Governor were required to be sworn in before the State Legislature. The Legislature met beginning the first Monday of odd years. After 1881 the Governor had to be sworn in on the first Monday of the year because the Legislature began meeting later, on the third Wednesday in January. All other elected officials are only required to have their oaths and bonds filed with the Secretary of State prior to the Tuesday after the 1st Monday in January following their election.
