Bond Registers, Coupon Books. 1876-1985 8 vols. and 3 boxes
From the first days of statehood, the Nevada State Treasury was perpetually short on funds. To close the gap between expenses and income, Nevada sold bonds to finance many public works projects. The State issued engraved certificates to individuals, businesses, and banks that purchased the bonds. At the bottom of each bond was a set of coupons that were to be presented periodically to the Treasurer for repayment with interest. When the bond was fully paid, the certificates were returned to the Treasurer, the bond perforated with holes, and the bond stamped "paid." The Treasurer kept track of the sale and redemption of bonds in bond registers that included the name of the bond, the name of the purchaser, the amount sold, the interest rate, and redemption details.
There are two formats in this series: loose documents and bound volumes. Cancelled bonds in this series represent only a sampling of bonds issued by the State.
In the late 20th century the State was active in another type of bond activity. To encourage industrial and economic development in Nevada, the State issued loans to companies who wished to build or expand existing facilities in Nevada. These loans took the form of Industrial Development Bonds and Economic Development Bonds and were authorized by the State Board of Finance. Each applicant was required to provide extensive documentation regarding the company's history, operations, and financial health. Because these applications were part of meeting materials, they have been filed in the Finance Board series.
