Research and Copy Fees

Authorization:

NRS 378.270 enables the Nevada State Library and Archives to charge fees for records search and photocopies. Because the Archives has few staff members, it is necessary to charge a research fee for searching archival records.

Exceptions:

NRS 239.020 states that no agency can charge the Veteran's Administration (VA) for copies or certification of any public record. In addition, the Nevada State Library and Archives does not charge the VA for research in service records.

There is no charge for reference questions about collections, review of records inventories or searches on computer indexes. A reference question is one that can be answered by looking into the written or computerized inventories or at any of the published reference works including the Nevada Revised Statutes, Statutes of Nevada or the bound Legislative Bill books.

Research fees:

The Nevada State Library and Archives charges a research fee of $15.00 per hour for Nevada residents because the agency receives general fund appropriations from their taxes. The research fee for non-residents is $20.00 per hour. State agencies receive one hour of free research. There is no charge for staff assistance or retrieval of records to those patrons using the records on the premises. Because portions of Governors' records are confidential by NRS 378.290, research fees will be charged for staff review and the deletion of confidential information.

Copying fees: All copies made by staff are $.10 each, except that the first thirty copies are free to the general public and the first 50 pages are free to state agencies. Researchers who make their own copies for the microfilm reader/printer will be charged $.15 per copy. Photocopies of inventory pages are subject to the copying fees.

Photograph Fees:

Photographs are reproduced under agreements with private venders. Please allow at least two weeks or more for reproductions of photographs. If a negative exists for the desired print, the purchaser pays only for the copy print, but if a copy negative must be made, the purchaser will pay for the cost of making a negative in addition to the print. Special arrangements can be made for oversize prints, color photographs or line camera reproductions for publication.

Photographs may be scanned and mailed electronically.  Scans of five or fewer photographs are free of charge.  Scans of six or more photos are $2.00 each for black and white and $3.00 each for color, beginning with the first image.

Black & White Prints
size negative no negative
5 X 7 $11.00 $30.00
8 X 10 $15.50 $35.00
11 X 14 $20.00 $40.00

Reproduction of Audio Media:

The collections include Dictaphone belts, reel to reel and cassette audio tapes. Cassette tapes can be reproduced for $5.00 per cassette tape. Please allow one week for reproduction. The Nevada State Library and Archives does not have the capabilities for reproducing the Dictaphone belts or reel to reel tapes. Researchers must provide their own means of copying these. The Division does have equipment to listen to reel to reel tapes.

Video Cassette Tapes and Films:

The Nevada State Library and Archives does not have the capability to duplicate films or videotapes at this time. Should a researcher request a copy of an uncopyrighted videotape or film, staff will make arrangements with a commercial service and the cost of reproduction and staff time (research fee) will be charged to the patron.

Maps and Architectural Drawings:

The Division now has the capability of reproducing maps and architectural drawings using scanning technology.  Color scans are $5.00 each, black and white scans are $4.00 each.  There is an additional fee for printing:   $3.00 per linear foot for color prints and $2.00 per linear foot for black and white prints.  Copies to CD are $10.00 per disk.

There is NO publication fee for use of archival photographs. Credit must be given to the Nevada State Library and Archives whenever any photograph is provided by NSLA and is used for any purpose.
