Nevada State Prison Inmate Case Files
Proof of Death
Archives staff will accept the following as proof of death of a natural person: death certificate, copy of written notification from the Nevada Office of Vital Statistics, a dated newspaper obituary with newspaper citation; copy from the Social Security Death Benefit Index or proof of birth indicating that person would be more than 100 years old. Proof of birth includes, birth certificate, baptismal record, copy of census showing the age of an individual; document showing date of birth, or a genealogical chart containing citation of source of information.
In order to facilitate access Archives staff will look in the prison file to determine proof of birth or death. If the file contains acceptable proof of death from another state, staff will disclose the files that are older than 30 years. If acceptable proof is not in the file, staff will refer the researcher to the appropriate vital statistics office.
