Access to Confidential Prison Records
Nevada State Prison Inmate Case Files are confidential under Nevada law (NRS 209.351 and 209.251). These files are not "Records of Criminal History" as defined in NRS 179A.070 and are not discloseable under that chapter. They are inactive prison files, accessioned into the Archives, and preserved for their historical value. Records deposited in the State Archives that are confidential or restricted by state law are subject to NRS 378.300, and remain confidential for 30 years, or if that record relates to a natural person, until his death, whichever is later.
If the former inmate is deceased, a researcher will be allowed to view the files that are at least 30 years old from the close of the file. All inmate case files are open to members of the State Board of Prison Commissioners, all other state officers, members of the legislature, and the sheriffs of the several counties of this state (NRS 209.251).
