Lazslo Varga

Lazslo Varga

Lazslo Varga was executed at the Nevada State Prison on June 7, 1949. He was convicted in the murder of Billie Rhae Morning in Wells, Nevada, on March 22, 1948. Varga hitch hiked across eastern Nevada, telling everyone he met that he was looking for a Lutheran Councilor, since he had come from New York with the aid of Lutheran Councils. In Elko County he was directed to Presbyterian Reverend Morning, but found the minister's wife alone. Varga murdered Mrs. Morning and stole money from the house. According to his wishes, he was executed clad in a black shroud with a white cross on the back, a costume that he said was customary for penitents expecting immediate death in Hungary. The Hungarian native came to the United States after World War II and was nineteen at his death.
