Ben Kuhl was arrested for murdering the driver during the last stage robbery in the United States. On December 5, 1916 the mail stage from Three Creek, Idaho, to Jarbidge, Nevada, did not arrive. When a search party located the missing stage, the wagon driver was dead and over $3,000 was missing. Kuhl was a native of Michigan and at the time of his imprisonment was 33 years old. His occupation was listed as baker. He was convicted of murder in the first degree and sentenced to death. He was received at the Nevada State Prison on October 19, 1917; however his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment on December 13, 1918. Kuhl served 27 years, 6 months, and 28 days in prison. He finally was granted parole on May 16, 1945. At the time of his release Kuhl had served longer than any other inmate then at the Nevada State Prison.
