 Will James

Will James, Western artist and author, was in the Nevada State Prison in Carson City from May 1915 to his parole on April 11, 1916. He was convicted of Grand Larceny in White Pine County in eastern Nevada. He was at the time 22 years of age having been born in Canada, even though his prison record maintains that his nativity was Montana. He was denied parole a couple of times before being granted parole in April of 1916. In his application for parole in September 1915 he wrote, "I have a natural talent for drawing and during my imprisonment have done considerable of this work. It is my ambition to go East and study Art and I feel that if given an opportunity to develop this talent my future will be assured. As a sample of my work I am submitting for your inspection a few samples drawn by myself."
