Nevada State Prison Inmate Case Files
David Blackwell
David Blackwell was executed in the Nevada State Prison on April 22, 1949. He was convicted of killing two Reno police officers on November 8, 1947. He escaped the Washington State Reformatory in 1947 and shot a grocer during a robbery in Tacoma before being caught and returned to the Reformatory. He again escaped and shot a former friend before leaving Washington with two fellow escapees. The trio went on a robbery spree throughout Colorado, Washington, and Oregon, before turning up in Reno nine days later. After stealing $3,800 from two taverns, the youths retreated to a local motel where Detective Capt. LeRoy Geach and Detective Sgt. Allen Glass went to question them. Blackwell met the officers with a hail of bullets from a gun he kept under his pillow. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he was executed at the age of nineteen.
