The Nevada State Library and Archives (NSLA) is responsible for working with the Nevada library community to develop planning documents which frame the vision and direction for Nevada library services on a statewide basis. These planning documents include a statewide masterplan, a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) State Plan, a Nevada Literacy Office Strategic Plan, and a Statewide Continuing Education Plan. Statewide Master Plan for Public Libraries. As outlined in Nevada Revised Statute (NRS 378.083), the NSLA Administrator shall develop a statewide master plan for public libraries, including plans for levels of library services and resources, which is developed through a continuing process of planning in which representatives from public libraries throughout the State participate. The master plan must be designed to extend 5 years into the future and must be made current at least every 2 years. The 2009 – 2013 master plan is currently in development and will be linked to this webpage by the end of 2008. LSTA Five Year State Plan 2008 – 2012. The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program is a part of the Museum and Library Services Act administered at the federal level by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The LSTA contains a provision for a state grants program which is administered in Nevada by the Nevada State Library and Archives (NSLA). The LSTA program was reauthorized by Congress in 2003 through 2009. Nevada Literacy Office Strategic Plan 2008. The Nevada Literacy Office (NLO) supports the efforts of non-profit state, county, and local literacy improvement programs for Nevadans, including libraries, Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, Summer Reading, and Volunteer Tutor programs. It was determined in 2006 that the Nevada Literacy Office needed to develop a long-term strategic plan. The resulting planning document was accepted by the State Council on Libraries and Literacy in May 2008. The NLO Strategic Literacy plan supports the NSLA Strategic Plan 2003-2008 Goal #4, “Identify and remove barriers to ensure that all Nevadans have equal opportunity to access and utilize public information.” In particular it addresses Objective 8 of Goal #4, “Expand and provide services to people with limited functional literacy or information skills.” Nevada Statewide Continuing Education Plan 2005 – 2007. Nevada libraries are committed to addressing the need for continuous library education through planned, coordinated and varied statewide continuing education programs. A statewide strategic planning advisory committee has been convened and is in the process of developing a new continuing education strategic plan for Nevada with completion targeted by the end of 2008. Nevada Statewide Digitization Plan. This FFY 2008 funded LSTA project addresses an activity identified in the LSTA 5 Year State Plan 2008-20012 under Goal 2 which calls for a planning initiative to develop a statewide digital plan that includes standards and a statewide framework. The goal charges the people, governments and associated cultural heritage organizations of Nevada with shared responsibility to preserve, protect and make the state’s unique heritage available. A statewide advisory committee has been convened and a planning document is targeted for completion by June 2009.
